Director of Medical Education & Research Letter

Welcome to the start of 2020! The Graduate Medical Education team is thrilled to announce that the Institution and the Family Medicine and OB/Gyn Residency Programs have been awarded Continued Accreditation Status from the ACGME. The ACGME commended the institution for ‘substantial compliance with the ACGME’s Institutional Requirements’. The Institutional Requirements have undergone significant changes in the past 18 months. The combined efforts of the CLER Committee, Wellness Committee, Program Directors and GME team have led to compliance in advance of required deadlines.

In December 2019, Womack hosted the Council of Podiatric Medicine, for a site visit for the Podiatry Residency Program. The program was found to be in substantial compliance. Due to changes within the Podiatry community regarding active duty authorizations, the Podiatry Residency Program will transition to Inactive status after graduation of the current residents. This will allow us the opportunity to reinitiate the program if the staffing needs of the military change.

In January, the Inter-Service PA Program held their graduation ceremony. In addition, the Family Medicine Hospitalist Program graduated their fourth graduate from the program. See details inside the newsletter. Finally, we hosted the Uniformed Services University in January, for a day-long Faculty Development Event, which was attended by faculty and trainees from multiple departments. Future Faculty Development events for this academic year are highlighted inside the newsletter. Note that the USUHS Single Sign On site remains down. A fix is anticipated in the next few weeks and the GME office will push this information out once it is available.

We continue our efforts for Grand Rounds events that have organizational benefit and impact. On Friday 14 February, we will conduct a Palliative Care Grand Rounds & Training Event, will faculty from Duke and our own organization. On 15 May, we will host the Peer Support Team from San Diego, and conduct training in order to initiate Womack’s own Peer Support Program. For more information about Peer Support, see inside the newsletter.  On 12 June, we will co-host Grand Rounds with the Department of Quality & Safety. This even will highlight the GME contributions to Performance Improvement and Quality Improvement projects. It will be followed by a Faculty Development Event, providing training on the intersection of GME and Quality & Safety. Everyone is welcome to attend these events!

Wellness Committee

The Wellness Committee is led by Dr. Donald Chaffee and meets the first Wednesday of very month at noon in the small conference room in Family Medicine.

Dr. Chaffee initiated the Provider Meetup, which is open to all Womack Providers and Residents.  This is a chance, once a quarter, to get together and socialize with faculty and learners from other departments.

The most recent meetup was in January at Dirtbag Ales. Please watch for the next meetup, which will be in April.

Department of Research

During the month of December 2019, the DCI team engaged in numerous collaborative efforts.  On 3 December, DCI hosted leadership members from the AMEDD Advanced Medical Technology (AAMTI)/Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) group.   Since 2014, WAMC has received 15 AAMTI research project awards which have ‘fast-tracked’ numerous promising technologies to support our warfighters.  During the visit, numerous WAMC staff members presented their respective project ideas which are now being developed into proposals for funding and execution.  On 5 December, in collaboration with the North Carolina Military Business Center (NCMBC), the Fort Bragg Research Institute (FBRI), the Geneva Foundation, Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) and the North Carolina Defense Technology Transition Office (DEFTECH), DCI co-sponsored a semi-annual Military Innovation Operational (MIO) Forum.  In this “Think Tank” session, military medical professionals presented some of their operational needs to the public.  White papers and proposals were solicited to help meet these needs.  During the next phase, the MIO-Forum will evaluate the submitted proposals and potential awardees will be invited for a follow up “Pitch Tank” session on 11 March 2020 at the FTCC in Fayetteville, NC.  At this forum, successful candidate projects will be selected for funding and possible product development.  On 11 December, DCI hosted the quarterly Cape Fear Research Consortium meeting at the Fayetteville State University (FSU) campus.  Among the participants were representatives from the FBRI, The Geneva Foundation and Campbell University.  The Consortium continues to coordinate multidisciplinary efforts involving industry, academia and the military.  Specifically, FSU faculty and students were ‘challenged’ to design projects which met both their academic degree requirements as well as solutions to real-world operational medical needs.  These will be reviewed in the upcoming academic semester. For more information about these and other research areas please contact the DCI at 910-907-6522.
