Accolades

Congratulations to MAJ Emily Penick (GS&O Faculty) and CPT Marion Ward (GS&O Resident) for their continued hard work on their HPV Process Improvement project they are working on in partnership with UNC. The goal of the project is to increase access to HPV vaccines on Fort Bragg and off HPV vaccines to soldiers in-processing and out-processing at the Medical One Stop. Their project was accepted for oral presentation at the Society of Gynecologic Oncology annual meeting and their abstract was also selected by the Program Chairs as one of the Top 50 abstracts to be included in the SGO select package. Their presentation will be made available for other organizations to review for educational content. MAJ Pennick and Dr. Ward continue to expand their vaccine efforts with the Epidemiological and Disease Control clinic now offering HPV vaccines. They will also be meeting with representatives from Tripler Army Medical Center to see if their project can be used at in-processing clinics there.

Hospitalist Fellowship Program

CPT Madison Paul from the Hospitalist Fellowship program is the first Hospitalist Fellow from WAMC to have research accepted to present at the Society of Hospitalist Medicine's annual conference in April 2022.
The Hospitalist Medicine Fellowship will present eight hours of CME at the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians. CPT Paul will also be competing in the research competition. There will be main stage lectures presented unopposed at the conference.
The Army selected two Hospitalist Fellows ( MAJ Chris Brooks and CPT Matthew Stewart) for the second year in a row. Typically the Hospitalist Fellowship is only assigned one fellow per year. This is the first time since its existence that two fellows have been selected in consecutive years. This demonstrates what an impact the Family Medicine Hospitalist Fellowship is having in both the AMEDD and DHA.

Special Events

Dietetic intern 1LT Nikkolas Chandarlis created a special theme meal for Black History Month. 1LT Chandarlis planned the Black History Month meal as part of his food service rotation. This theme meal is a favorite of our staff and the greatly enjoy showing their culture in food and dress.

HESD

Congratulations to Ms. Karen Roberson on her promotion to Training Coordinator. Ms. Roberson is an integral part of HESD and we are so happy for her to continue supporting the department in her new role. Ms. Roberson also earned her 30 years of Civilian Service in May 2022. Thank you for all of your hard work!
Congratulations to SSG Simmons who successfully graduated from the Advanced Leader Course in April 2022. SSG Simmons also received a certificate of appreciation from the Special Warfare Medical Group (Airborne) for his coordination of their medical proficiency training.
HESD was heavily involved in the MHS Genesis roll out and their contributions were greatly appreciated. SSG Simmons and SFC Batdorf both received Army Achievement Medals for their contributions while Ms. Roberson, Ms. Carson, Mr. Francis, and Mr. Lewis received certificates of appreciation.
HESD is sad to say farewell to SFC Theodore Batdorf. He was the NCOIC for one year and we will greatly miss his contributions to the department.

Department of Clinical Investigation

Dr. CJ Maldonado (PhD in cell biology), Deputy Director of DCI, received approval for his animal protocol entitled "Efficacy of Autologous Myogenic Satellite Cells in Muscle Architecture Repair, Force Production & Re-Injury Prevention." This was cleared by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at Campbell University. This is the first animal research study initiated by WAMC and sets the stage for future projects.
COL Ty Harris, Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon, received a recommendation by the Department of Army MRDC law division to file a provisional patent application for non-invasive intracerebral pressure monitoring device. The device is tiny, self-contained, non-invasive, and is usable by non-medical professionals. It allows for immediate diagnosis and can be used continuously or intermittently.

Research Symposium

On May 11, 2022, WAMC and the Department of Research hosted their XVI annual research symposium. This event provides a venue for staff and trainees to submit their research projects and posters for presentations. The winners from the research symposium were:

Inaugural PI/QI/EBP Forum

On May 18, 2022, GME and QSD co-hosted our first ever PI/QI/EBP forum. This is event was undertaken to highlight the intersection of Graduate Medical Education and Process Improvement, in an effort to enhance organization-wide awareness of ongoing projects. Our guest speaker was Dr. Catherine Kuhn, Associate Dean of GME and ACGME DIO at Duke University Medical Center. She also chairs the ACGME CLER Review Committee. She spoke on the inter-relationship of Joint Commission and ACGME priorities and goals.

We look forward to continuing this event in the future as a way to highlight these projects as a form of scholarly activity, and to enhance cross-pollination of ideas.

Simulation Center

On June 3, 2022 the Simulation Center will host a ceremony to honor Mr. Raymond P. Sanders who worked as the GME Administrator from 2005-2017. Ray was a strong supporter of simulation and believed that Womack had the capacity to build a simulation program as good as, or better than any Army military treatment facility. When the sole employee of the simulation center left his position, Ray took over the job in addition to his own workload and advocated relentlessly for the resources the program needed to grow and meet his vision of what it could become. Everything that the simulation program has achieved was done on the foundation that Ray so carefully built. We will proudly unveil a portrait of Ray hung beside our Accreditation Certificate to honor the vision and work he did. Please join us at the Simulation Center at 1430 on 3 June!
Congratulations to Ms. Nancy Harnois, Simulation Administrator, for winner the Simulation Administrator of the Year Award from the Army's Central Simulation Committee! This award recognizes the top Simulation Administrator among all Army trianing sites, and it a testatment to her leadership and skill. Nancy - we are so proud of you!

Medical Library

The Medical Library has started a small digital library of video tutorials demonstrating how to do some of the most frequently asked questions we receive. Videos include how to earn and retrieve CME credit through UpToDate® and ClinicalKey®, how to conduct searches and use filters on PubMed, how to register for and login with an OpenAthens remote access account among other topics. Please visit the medical library's LibGuide page for links to available videos or click the links below.  Access to milSuite is required in order to view the videos on milTube. Keep an eye out for additional videos too as will be regularly adding new content. If you have any requests for how-to videos, please contact the medical library directly.
