From the Director of Medical Education

This has been a very busy and exciting summer for the Directorate of Medical Education! In GME, we are thrilled to start the first new Internal Medicine and General Surgery residencies in over 40 years in the AMEDD. The Medical Simulation Center achieved full accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, a several-year undertaking. Wel welcomed an entirely new active-duty leadership team in Hosptial Staff Education and Development. The Department of Clinical Investigation remains heavily involved in the COVID response while continuing to support and advance research in the organization.
As we look to the future, we are making preparations to add a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Doctor of Occupational Therapy program at Womack, with start dates projected for 2023. We are exploring the option of becoming a formal 68C (LPN) training site, and continue to work to refine our Enhanced Paramedic Program. As some programs grow, we also say goodbye to the Podiatry Residency Program, which graduated its final residents in 2021.
We held several smaller graduation ceremonies in June 2021, due to gathering restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
Watch for the following events coming this spring!
25-6 April 2022: Phoenix Conference
11 May 2022: Womack Research Symposium, Guest Speaker Dr. Mark Porterpeter, USUHS
18 May 2022: Womack PI/QI/EBP/Medical Education Symposium, Dr. Catherine M. Kuhn, Duke University Medical School
3 June 2022: GME Graduation Ceremony

HESD

The Nurse Summer Training Program (NSTP) is a program that allows nursing cadets enrolled in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) to complete clinical hours at a Military Treatment Facility during the summer between their junior and senior year. They spend four weeks at the hospital and complete 120-160 hours rotating around to multiple different care areas. The first group of seven cadets just graduated and a new group of seven is already on the ground and working hard!

Department of Clinical Investigation

-DCI continues to support the Fort Bragg/WAMC response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We continue to provide town halls, op-eds, and various social media uploads to provide evidence to address pandemic response to include vaccine hesitancy. These will continue indefinitely.
-DCI support for COVID-19 activities involve 17 real-world efforts including the remdesivir adaptive trial and genomic and serology-based diagnostic testing. We are also supporting Operation Warp Speed as the only DOD site engaged in the Novavax vaccine trial.
-DCI leads the Osprey team composed of subject matter experts that meet weekly with LTG Erik Kurilla, 18th Airborne Corps Commander, to inform of COVID science updates.
-During the 3rd quarter of fiscal year 2021, WAMC had ten scholarly activities published. Twenty-two posters and podium presentations have been accepted at the 2021 Military Health System Research Symposium to be held as an in-person conference this year.
-The MARS database expansion continues to be one of our top priorities. Our goal continues to be to produce an enterprise-level database for DOD health training programs. As previously mentioned, papers from the parent database have resulted in publications in the top journals in the world.
For more information about these items and other research areas, please contact DCI at 910-907-6522.

Faculty Development

On September 9 and 10th, WAMC hosted a Faculty Development event for medical and dental personnel to improve their skills as clinical educators. At the event, LTC David Kassop received his certificate in teaching from USUHS. MAJ Emily Penick (WAMC Gyn Oncology) and CDR Dink Jardine (DIO Camp LeJeune) were the instructors for the event. Our next Faculty Development EVent is 24-25 January 2022.

Mr. Paul Busch retired from the Medical Simulation team this summer. Paul transferred from Fort Bragg EMS to the Sim Center in January of 2016, earning his certification as a Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist in 2017 (one of <500 people worldwide to earn the certification) before retiring in 2021. Between his time with EMS and his time at the Sim Center he had 18 years of civilian service on top of his 26 years of military service. He is enjoying his retirement gardening and traveling. We will miss you, Paul!
