The internet is full of misinformation so it is important to know how to check if what you are seeing is factual. There are several things you can do to verify the information you are seeing is as accurate as possible.
-Crosscheck: Don't just take one website's information as fact. Check to see if the same story is being written about on other reputable websites. If this is the only website reporting something that seems like big news, take a moment to evaluate. Also look to see if the website can be found on lists of known Fake News sites. Click here to see Wikipedia's ongoing list of known fake news sites.
-Author: Check out the author of the article. What are their credentials? Have they written for other publications? What results generate when running the author's name through Google?
-Read the About Us section: Most websites and organizations have an About Us section. Who are they? What is their mission statement? Who are they affiliated with?
-Bias: Does the article make you feel really strongly about the topic? The author could be using tactics to bias you towards their point of view. Look for articles that maintain a neutral, factual stance about a topic.
